The protest took place near Saing Taung village, on the outskirts of Hpakant.

Local residents said the demonstration was held despite heavy security risks, as clashes have been ongoing in nearby areas since January 31, and junta forces based in the town have been firing artillery into surrounding areas.

During the protest, demonstrators held banners and chanted slogans including:

“No to the Myitsone Dam Project”

“Stop the Myitsone Project Immediately”

“Hpakant is still resisting”

“The people come first — no dictatorship”

“No to the military coup”

“Let’s unite to overthrow the terrorist military”

“Join together to win the Spring Revolution”

“Reject Min Aung Hlaing’s illegal election backed by the Chinese government”

The protest highlighted continued public resistance to military rule, even under dangerous conditions.

Five Years Since the Military Coup in Myanmar

Photo-Public Myanmar News

Public Myanmar News | 1 February 2026

By Ko Saw

Today marks five years since the military coup in Myanmar, which took place on February 1, 2021.

The Myanmar military seized power after claiming—without evidence—that the 2020 general election, overwhelmingly won by the National League for Democracy (NLD), was fraudulent.

The country’s civilian leaders, including State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and President U Win Myint, were arrested and charged under multiple politically motivated laws. Thousands of political prisoners remain behind bars across the country.

Crackdown on Civil Resistance

In early 2021, millions of civil servants and civilians joined the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM), a nationwide non-violent protest campaign aimed at restoring democracy.

The military responded with live ammunition, mass arrests, and brutal repression.

Photo- CJ

Some of the earliest deadly crackdowns occurred in late February and March 2021, including the violent dispersal of protests in Hlaing Tharyar, Yangon, and Mandalay.

On April 9, 2021, security forces opened fire on demonstrators in Bago, killing nearly 100 people and arresting more than 50. The massacre became one of the deadliest single-day attacks since the coup.

Rise of Armed Resistance

In February 2021, elected lawmakers formed the Committee Representing the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH), followed by the creation of the National Unity Government (NUG).

In March 2021, young activists formed the People’s Defence Force (PDF), launching armed resistance against the military regime.

One of the most significant battles took place on December 14, 2021, in Lay Kay Kaw, Karen State, which later became a symbol of nationwide resistance.

Escalation of War

In October 2023, the resistance launched Operation 1027, led by the Three Brotherhood Alliance—

the Arakan Army (AA), Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA), and the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA).

The operation expanded across northern and southern Shan State, Mandalay, Sagaing, Chin, Rakhine, and Ayeyarwady regions, resulting in the seizure of large territories from military control.

As the regime’s forces weakened, the junta introduced a forced conscription law in March 2024, abducting young men for military training. Those who refused were reportedly forced to pay heavy monthly fines.

Thousands of conscripts were sent to the front lines with little or no combat training. Since 2024, many have been killed, while hundreds have defected or surrendered.

Humanitarian Crisis

As of February 2026, fighting continues nationwide.

More than two million people have been displaced and are living as internally displaced persons (IDPs).

Junta’s Sham Elections

To retain power, the military held staged elections in three phases:

December 28, 2025

January 11, 2026

January 24, 2026

The United Nations and much of the international community rejected the process as illegal and fraudulent.

China, however, recognized the outcome and described the process as successful.

Looking Forward

Five years after the coup, Myanmar remains under military rule.

Yet across the country, citizens and resistance forces continue to fight for freedom, democracy, and peace—holding on to hope for a future beyond dictatorship.

Airstrikes in Hakha Kill Three Family Members, Including a Child

Public Myanmar News , January 5, 2026

By PM01,

Airstrikes carried out by Myanmar’s military on villages in Hakha Township, Chin State, have killed three members of the same family, including a child, according to local residents and ground sources.

The strikes targeted Haltu and Haiphai villages around midnight on January 4, witnesses said. Residents reported that jet fighter aircraft were used in the attacks.

Local sources told media that there were no active clashes in the targeted villages at the time of the airstrikes and that no Chin resistance forces were present in the area.

“There were absolutely no clashes. The junta deliberately bombed civilian homes,” a local source told Public Myanmar News. “There are no CDF-Hakha forces in those villages—none at all. The attacks were intentionally directed at civilians.”

As a result of the bombardment, three family members — including a mother and a child — were killed in Haltu village, while one adult man was injured, according to eyewitnesses.

In nearby Haiphai village, residents said there were no reported deaths, but several houses were damaged by the airstrikes.

Public Myanmar News said it is continuing to verify the extent of damage to homes through its ground sources.

The Military junta’s authorities have not issued any comment on the latest airstrikes.

The source added that although CDF-Hakha forces carried out an attack on the military’s Light Infantry Battalion 266 base in Hakha Township on December 26, 2025—a clash that lasted only one day—there have been no ground battles since then. However, local resistance groups say the military has continued to carry out frequent airstrikes on villages in areas surrounding Hakha, despite the absence of ongoing fighting on the ground.

Meanwhile, the CDF–Hakha Central Council announced that all properties in Hakha town belonging to parliamentary candidates who are participating in the military junta’s so-called election have been confiscated and declared public property.

Latest Situation of the Katha Town Seizure Battle

Photo- CJ

Public Myanmar News ,January 2, 2026

By PM02,

Katha town, located in the upper part of Sagaing Region, is currently facing an ongoing town seizure battle as joint revolutionary forces, including the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and People’s Defense Forces (PDF), continue their offensive operations.

On December 31, 2025, the joint forces successfully seized a junta military checkpoint located on the western side of Katha town.

Following the seizure of the checkpoint, revolutionary forces have opened evacuation routes, allowing civilians to leave the town safely, according to ground sources who spoke to Public Myanmar News.

The Katha town seizure battle began on December 28, 2025, and has continued to intensify for more than four consecutive days, up to today, January 2, 2026.

Photo- CJ

During the fighting, revolutionary forces managed to seize several junta defensive positions and vehicle compounds located in some urban wards.

Additionally, on the morning of January 2, another military camp at a town entrance checkpoint was captured.

After capturing the junta checkpoint located in Patta Myar Ward on the western side of Katha—along the road leading to Indaw town—revolutionary forces allowed local residents to evacuate from the town, according to a Katha resident in his early 30s.

“Now even the town exit checkpoint has been taken by revolutionary forces. They have opened the route for civilians to leave,”he said.

Photo- CJ

At present, thousands of displaced civilians are fleeing from Katha town toward Indaw, Mawlu, Myitkyina, and other nearby towns, according to confirmation from a Mawlu local resident.

However, rumors have also circulated claiming that revolutionary forces were detaining displaced civilians and demanding money at a location approximately eight miles west of Katha town.

During clashes on December 29, artillery fire by the junta military struck Kyantaw Village, south of Katha town, burning down a residential house. As a result, a 50-year-old man inside the house was burned to death.

As of this morning, fighting continues to be intense near Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) 309, as well as around Tharyar Gone and Zaydi Gone areas in Ward No. (5) on the northern side of the town.

Residents report that continuous sounds of heavy weapons can still be heard.

Photo- CJ

Up until 3:30 PM today, residents reported seeing several junta reconnaissance aircraft circling above Katha town. However, no direct airstrikes have been confirmed so far.

Nevertheless, the aviation monitoring channel WaiHin reported that fighter jets and Y-12 aircraft carried out airstrikes on Katha town during the night of January 1 and again today.

The current Katha town seizure battle is no longer limited to the outskirts but has intensified toward urban areas.

Civilians remain trapped in uncertainty due to unsafe road conditions, harsh winter weather, and severe livelihood challenges, forcing many families to wait and closely monitor the situation.

Katha town, the district headquarters of Katha District in Sagaing Region, consists of 11 wards and nearly 200 villages, with an urban population of more than 26,000 residents.

In a statement released late on December 31, the Arakan Army said the air attack led to extensive destruction of civilian homes and casualties among local residents in Thandwe. While initial reports indicated multiple casualties, detailed figures were not immediately available.

In a follow-up statement issued on January 1, the AA said that two 500-pound bombs were dropped by a military jet fighter on Magha Road in Ward No. 1, injuring three residents and destroying six houses by fire.

Public Myanmar News independently verified the injuries and property damage through on-the-ground local sources. Regarding the statement, Public Myanmar News contacted local sources on the ground, who confirmed that while civilians were injured and homes were destroyed by fire, there were no fatalities.

“Yes, houses were burned down. Some residents in the ward were injured and sustained shrapnel and blast-related wounds. However, there were no fatalities,” local on-the-ground sources told Public Myanmar News.

The incident followed another airstrike carried out by the military on December 29 in Kyin Kan Gyi village, Lin Thar Ward, Ngapali town. According to local media outlet Narinjara, the attack involved four 500-pound bombs dropped by jet aircraft, killing seven civilians, including children, and injuring at least 15 others.

During that attack, a three-year-old child was trapped under debris for approximately 12 hours before being rescued by a local volunteer rescue group from Ngapali Beach at around 8:00 a.m. on December 30, Narinjara reported.

According to data released by Narinjara on January 1, at least 754 civilians have been killed or injured across 14 townships in Rakhine State currently under Arakan Army control. The casualties include 285 deaths and 469 injuries resulting from airstrikes, naval shelling, and artillery attacks carried out by Myanmar’s military.
